The second installment of the "Les Nations" series is dedicated to the German style. In this program we will play the order "L'Imperiale" from François Couperin's "Les Nations". Together with Couperin's music, we will present two other works by German composers - the sonata for violin and harpsichord in E major, and the trio-sonata "Sanguineus & Melancholicus" for two violins and continuo by Sebastian's son, Carl Philippe Emmanuel Bach.

The trio-sonata "Sanguineus & Melancholicus" describes a meeting between two opposite characters, each of which is represented by own of the violins. The melancholic violin, played by Hadas, opens with a sad and contemplative melody, while Rachel, playing the sanguine violin, immediately answers with laughter and cleverness. The two violins converse so, until finally Sanguineus manages to pull Melancholicus out of his sadness and join him for a jolly fugue ending the sonata.

Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas for violin and harpsichord, in similar fashion to his sonatas for flute and harpsichord or viola da gamba and harpsichord, are the first sonatas in which the harpsichord is relieved of his accompanying duty, and becomes an equal partner in the music. In this program we shall perform the sonata in E major BWV 1016.
